As the saying goes “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and he will eat forever”. Feeding multitudes of starving people through relief food isn’t enough because once the relief food is over, they go back to being desperate.
Realizing this, HARDO’s main focus is on Food security. We teach agro-pastoral communities on how to ‘catch fish’ by empowering them to become self-reliant through agriculture.
For the past 2 decades we have achieved this by:
Assisting farmers in preparation of hundreds of
acres of arable land along riverine areas
Providing communities with seeds including maize, sorghum, sesame, beans and vegetable seeds
Providing hand tools for cultivation
Providing fertilizers and safe pesticides for better yields
Training farmers on best and modern farming practices
Additionally we have assisted farmers to irrigate their farms by digging irrigation canals and distributing irrigation pumps.
Prolonged drought, famine and floods are however challenges that most agro-pastoralists in Somalia have to contend with. To cope with these, we teach these communities on disaster preparedness and disaster management to minimize the damages caused by the natural calamities
